Laminate flooring – an attractive and practical solution

Laminate flooring is a popular flooring solution for apartments, single-family homes, offices, and other interior spaces. Modern laminate floors are available in a wide variety of wood- and stone-effect patterns, in different colors and surface textures, making them suitable for a wide range of interiors.

What is laminate flooring?

Laminate flooring is a multi-layered flooring product. The top wear-resistant layer protects the decorative surface, which gives the floor its appearance. Beneath it is typically a high-density fiberboard-based core layer, which contributes to the panel’s structural stability.

Most modern laminate floors use a click-lock system, so they can be installed as a floating floor. However, proper installation requires a properly prepared subfloor, appropriate underlayment, and adherence to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The Main Advantages of Laminate Flooring

Wide selection of designs

In addition to wood, oak, walnut, and other wood-grain finishes, you can choose from a variety of colors and surface textures.

Good value for the price

In many cases, laminate flooring can be a more affordable alternative to real wood or certain premium flooring options.

Wear-resistant surface

Laminate flooring with the appropriate wear class may be suitable for everyday use in both residential and commercial settings.

Faster completion

Click-lock systems can be installed without adhesive, using the floating method, which allows for faster installation under the right conditions.

Easy maintenance

Laminate flooring is easy to maintain with regular vacuuming and proper, slightly damp cleaning.

Can be used in a wide variety of rooms

By choosing the right product, it can be used in bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, offices, and other indoor spaces.

The Structure of Laminate Flooring

Top wear-resistant layer

The transparent top coat protects the decorative surface from wear, scratches, and stains caused by everyday use.

Decorative Layer

This determines the appearance of laminate flooring. Thanks to modern technologies, wood- and stone-effect surfaces can provide a highly detailed look and feel.

Backing Layer

Laminate flooring is typically made with a high-density fiberboard-based core layer, which ensures the panel's stability.

Bottom Stabilizing Layer

The bottom layer helps stabilize the panel's structure, and its design may vary depending on the specific product.

What kind of laminate flooring should you choose?

When making your choice, it’s not just the color and pattern that matter. It’s also worth considering the room’s intended use, the expected foot traffic, and the technical specifications of the flooring.

  • the service and wear resistance class,
  • the thickness of the panel,
  • the quality of the jointing system,
  • the desired surface appearance,
  • the expected use of the room,
  • the requirements for the washer,
  • as well as the installation requirements specified by the manufacturer.

In high-traffic areas, it is particularly important to select a product with the appropriate wear class.

The Process of Installing Laminate Flooring

1

On-site survey

We will measure the room to be floored, inspect the condition of the subfloor, and discuss the technical specifications of the selected laminate flooring.

2

Checking the Outlet

Laminate flooring requires a surface that is sufficiently level, stable, clean, and dry. If the subfloor is unsuitable, repairs or leveling may be necessary before installation.

3

Placing a Washer

Selecting the appropriate underlayment for a given laminate floor and subfloor is important for the floor’s stability, walking comfort, and acoustic properties .

4

Assignment of Panels

We determine the direction of installation, the starting point, and the layout of the rows in such a way that the result is an aesthetically pleasing and sufficiently stable floor covering .

5

Click-to-Fit Panels

The panels are connected to one another according to the manufacturer's system. Precise cutting is required around walls, doors, pipes, and other obstacles.

6

Creating Expansion Joints

As a floating floor, laminate flooring can move to a certain extent, so an expansion gap as specified by the manufacturer must be provided next to walls and other fixed structures.

7

Edging and Handover

After the tiling is complete, we install the necessary trim and inspect the finished surface, the joints, and the connections.

Why is it important to use the right outlet?

The condition of the subfloor beneath the laminate flooring significantly affects the quality of the finished floor. If the subfloor is uneven, too damp, or not sufficiently stable, it can cause problems in the long run.

If the subfloor is uneven, the movement of the panels, stress on the joints, and a hollow sound when walked on can all be problems. Therefore, before installing the flooring, it is advisable to have the condition of the subfloor professionally inspected.

Subfloor Leveling and Floor Preparation →

Dilation – one of the most important details

Laminate flooring may expand or contract slightly in response to changes in temperature and humidity. For this reason, it should not be completely wedged between walls, door frames, pipe penetrations, or other fixed structures.

The proper size of the expansion gap must always be determined based on the manufacturer's specifications for the selected laminate flooring.

One consequence of inadequate expansion may be bulging of the floor or gaps forming at the joints. We’ve written about this in more detail in our Knowledge Base.

Laminate Flooring and Moisture

Traditional laminate flooring is not the same as completely waterproof flooring. Exposure to large amounts of moisture or prolonged dampness can damage the floor’s structure, so it is important to clean up spills quickly.

If you're looking for flooring for a room where moisture resistance is a top priority, it's worth considering suitable vinyl or SPC options as well.

Laminate flooring or SPC?

Laminate flooring

It can be a good choice for those looking for a wide selection of wood- and stone-effect designs and warm flooring that offers good value for money for dry indoor spaces.

SPC flooring

SPC is a rigid flooring material that, when the right product is chosen, can offer a moisture-resistant or waterproof solution. For this reason, it is worth considering even in rooms where moisture is a key consideration.

Maintaining Laminate Flooring

Regular vacuuming

Removing dust and small particles of dirt helps protect the surface from unnecessary wear.

Lightly damp cleaning

It is not recommended to mop laminate flooring with large amounts of water. It is always best to follow the manufacturer's instructions when choosing a cleaning method.

Using Furniture Protectors

Appropriate protective pads placed under furniture legs can reduce the risk of scratches and surface damage.

Entrance-area grease trap

A dirt trap placed at the entrance can help reduce the amount of sand and other small particles that end up on the floor.
